That is how the French poet and critic Louis Aragon described Death of the Vazir-Mukhtar. The book tells the story of the last year in the life of Alexander Griboyedov, the writer and diplomat of the Pushkin era. He went from being feted in St Petersburg as the successful negotiator of a peace treaty with Persia to dying at the hands of a Tehran mob in January 1829.
Smert' Vazir-Mukhtara is a multilayered exploration of Griboyedov's interior life and Russian society which sprang from the great burst of creativity in the early years of the Soviet Union. Its young author, Yuri Tynianov, wrote it at his literary peak in 1926-28.
